Origami Beasts
A downloadable game for Windows
Made for Mini Jam 177: Papercraft
Embark on a quest to the deepest levels of a forgotten ancient city, filled with dangerous beasts. Not all monsters that lurk here wish to do you harm however, and you'll need their help if you are to survive your journey.
Every monster has a type: Strong (Red), Magic (Blue), and Quick (Green). Each type is strong against one and weak against the other, and is stronger in one stat and weaker in another (Strong beats Quick beats Magic beats Strong). You can be accompanied by up to three monsters, and acquiring another allows you to replace one in your party. You can also attack a monster with your hammer to gain a free round in combat.
Your monsters can grow in strength by acquiring upgrades through chests, or leveling up. Leveling up requires various items found throughout the ruins, which can be gained from chests, defeating monsters, and the rocks and plants that can be destroyed with your hammer. Special secret chests can be found which reward permanent boosts to your monsters.
There are 5 floors in the dungeon, each of increasing difficulty. The go deeper, you must locate a door to challenge the boss. Defeating the boss lets you proceed to the next floor. The only difference between floors besides the strength of the monsters is the monsters that can be found there. Every floor after the fifth can contain any monster in the game, and slowly increases in difficulty.
NOTES:
- I was unable to spend enough time testing the game, so the game balance may be off, and I'm unsure how far it's actually possible to go.
- Swapping a monster's place in the party out of combat had to be disabled due to a bug found late into the game jam, this should not have a major impact as you can still swap while in combat with no penalty.
- The skip button is present when selecting the starter monster and will cause the game to crash if pressed. This bug was found late into the game jam and there was not time to fix this.
- Occasionally, multiple monsters are encountered at the same time, resulting in overlap. This is unintended and while hopefully be fixed in the future.
- Partially related, an encounter may start right when loading into the level. This is unintended and was not discovered until very late into development. You seem to be able to safely flee from these, but it will result in a few monsters that simply de-spawn when touched
- Additional set dressing was to be included on the map, but there wasn't enough time to add it.
- Items were planned, but were cut early into development, and the only means of healing is leveling up or going to the next floor, so I'd recommend waiting to level up until you need to heal
